On Oct. 5, 2011, a vote by members of the Association for Worksite Health Promotion (AWHP), Northbrook, Ill., approved a resolution to dissolve AWHP as a legal entity and distribute the remaining assets to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). AWHP will transition from a stand-alone organization to a community within ACSM.

Former AWHP members who join ACSM become part of the Health Promotion Interest Group, which, according to 2001 AWHP president Ralph Colao, “will allow us to maintain our own connectedness and to take advantage of significant opportunities for progress that ACSM will provide us and all of worksite health promotion.”

Benefits to former AWHP members who join ACSM include the following:
• A large, diverse membership base with multidisciplinary experts who are attuned to the science and practical applications of health promotion.
• A special Health Promotion Interest Group that will serve as the organizational vehicle for communication and activities related to worksite health promotion.
• A conference, ACSM’s Health & Fitness Summit, where science and its applications come together in a national meeting that historically has included programming for AWHP members, and will now include special keynotes and additional sessions on worksite health promotion topics.
• Online resources that will enhance communication and sharing of new knowledge and best practices.
• Opportunities for professional advancement, including publishing scholarly works, presenting talks and fulfilling leadership roles.
• A strong chapter-based network that will accommodate AWHP chapter leaders and members, allowing them to address local needs, and expand networking and professional development and service opportunities.
• A publication, ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, that embraces the application of science to practice on diverse topics vital to the field of health promotion.

Says Colao, “ACSM has welcomed AWHP with open arms. [It has] supported activities and our suggestions that will make our membership in ACSM a profoundly attractive option for all of us.

A joint task force charged with securing the transition to ACSM has been working diligently to make everything swift and painless and very fruitful.”
